The seven day Lemosho variation is preferred over the six day option because it breaks up day two into two days, providing better acclimatization and a more gradual ascent. This seven day trekking route starts with a two-day walking journey from Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1 which would result in an altitudinal gain of 2,000 feet. Then on third day, you’ll leave for Moir Hut which is situated at 13,800 feet. This three days and the trekking involved will prepare your body better for higher altitudes to comes on the following days.
The trekking route from Barranco to Barafu followed by the summit day however remain unchanged from the Lemosho variation. This schedule is still very tough, though the extra day on the mountain on the seven day route will help climbers deal with the exhausting itinerary better than those who opted for the six day route.
Arriving at Kilimanjaro International airport, you will be welcomed by one of our experience driver guide, ready to greet and drive to Arusha town. He will introduce you to this wonderful city and country.
We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, and then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.
We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing.
We explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.
On day 4, you’ll move towards the peak of Kibo leaving behind the Shira Plateau. Our direction will change to southeast which will lead us to the Lava Tower (Shark’s Tooth). There’s a second junction shortly after the tower which leads up to the Arrow Glacier located 16,000 ft above sea level. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. This day is very important for acclimatization purposes, albeit you remain at the same elevation as when you started. This will prepare you for the harsher days following.
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. Then, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. This will mark the completion of the Southern Circuit which offers mesmerizing views of the summit from different angles. Camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare yourself for the summit day. The tops of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this position.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You’ll be heading in the northwesterly direction ascending through heavy scree and rocks towards the Stella Point located o the crater rim. This arguably is the most challenging portion of the trek.
At 18,600 feet above sea level in Stella Point, you’ll be rewarded with the most splendid sunrise view you’re ever likely to see. After a brief rest, you’ll ascend up to the summit which takes a little over an hour. At Uhuru Peak, you’ll have reached the highest point in Africa. If you reach here earlier, you might see the sunrise from here too.
From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. To combat the loose gravel while descending down, it is necessary that you have gaiters and trekking poles. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest where mist and rain can occur especially in late afternoon. After some time in the evening, enjoy your dinner and sleep for the day.
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi.
