The Umbwe Route is the least used, least crowded route on the mountain. For good reason, it is also the most difficult route on the mountain. Umbwe is a steep, constant, straight climb to the top that demand climbers to be physically fit and more energetic. The Umbwe route has a well-deserved reputation of being the most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail follows the southern circuit to the summit. The descent is done via the Mweka route. The route points including Umbwe gate to Bivouac camp, to Burranco camp, to Lava tower, to Arrow glacier camp, to Crater, to Uhuru peak.
After lunch at Lava Tower, you will scramble up the steep Class 2 trail to the Arrow Glacier Camp (4800m). Vegetation at Arrow Glacier is sparse and hikers are surrounded by stone scree.
At the camp, take some rest and have your lunch in the sun. Then you’ll descend down to Mweka Hut which has an elevation of 3100 m. The Mweka Trail passes through the scree and rocks into the moorland and then to the rainforests. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the high rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected.
