Umbwe Route

UMBWE ROUTE
umbwe route
OVERVIEW

The Umbwe Route is the least used, least crowded route on the mountain. For good reason, it is also the most difficult route on the mountain. Umbwe is a steep, constant, straight climb to the top that demand climbers to be physically fit and more energetic. The Umbwe route has a well-deserved reputation of being the most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail follows the southern circuit to the summit. The descent is done via the Mweka route. The route points including Umbwe gate to Bivouac camp, to Burranco camp, to Lava tower, to Arrow glacier camp, to Crater, to Uhuru peak.

After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up from Arusha (1400m) and drive to the Umbwe Gate. During this section of the hike, you should expect rain, mud, and fog. Also, be on the look out for wildlife, including Colobus monkeys. About halfway up the trail you will have a lunch break and you will reach the Bivouac Camp (2940m) late afternoon or early evening.

Hikers slowly ascend up the Western Breach to the Crater (5700m). Upon reaching the top of the crater, you will be amazed by the Northern Ice fields of Kilimanjaro with the Furtwangler Glacier directly in front of you. The ash pit is 340m across and 120m deep.

For about 2 hours, you will hike on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime accomplishment. Spend few minutes at the peak taking photographs and sipping a cup of tea before descending down to Barafu. It’ll take about 3 hours to reach Barafu Camp.

At the camp, take some rest and have your lunch in the sun. Then you’ll descend down to Mweka Hut which has an elevation of 3100 m. The Mweka Trail passes through the scree and rocks into the moorland and then to the rainforests. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the high rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected.
