Southern Circuit Tanzania

The Southern Circuit Tanzania where the famous Selous and Ruaha are located make up for a more intimate and better safari route as they are far less visited as compared to its northern counterpart.

That being said, the off-the-beaten-path safari destinations of Southern Circuit have got a lot on offer for the few intrepid ones who forsake the well-trodden and famous places of Northern Safari Circuit and head southward just to get a different view of Tanzania.

  • The second largest conservation area and the largest game reserve, Selous Game Reserve, is the main attraction of Southern Circuit. This reserve accommodates wide range of flora and fauna.
  • Established in 1964, Mikumi National Park covers an area of 3230 sq km and borders with Selous Game Reserve from the south. The two areas together form a unique ecosystem altogether.
  • The largest national park in Tanzania with an area of 20,226 sq km, Ruaha National Park is a major avifauna site with over 571 species of birdlife which includes the hornbills.
  • Located in the Kitulo Plateau, Kitulo National Park is situated at an elevation of 2,600 meters and has an immense floral diversity and was established primarily to protect that as opposed to wildlife.
  • With a mere size of 1990 sq km. Udzungwa Mountains National Park is known for its primate species, six distinct species of which are found in here. Iringa red colobus and Sanje crested mangabey are endemic to this mountain.
  • Located in the Katavi region, Katavi National Park is a very isolated park, albeit it is the third largest national park in Tanzania. It can only be reached by charter planes and will have to land in a dirt airstrip.
