GOMBE STREAM NATIONAL PARK
OVERVIEW
AREA : 52 Sq. Km.
ALTITUDE : 773-1500 Metres]
Situated 16kms north of Kigoma town in western Tanzania, Gombe is a narrow mountainous strip of the country bounded to the east by the crest of the rift valley escarpment and by Lake Tanganyika to the west. It is a fragile remnant of Chimpanzee habitat. The true beauty of Gombe National Park lies in its pristine natural landscape where there are no roads and you have to walk the entire park to vividly experience the nature with all of your sense.
Thanks to the changing altitude, the vegetation of this park varies from evergreen forests filled with tall trees to open woodlands and grasslands. Primates are the main attraction of this park which includes baboon, chimpanzee, blue monkey, red tailed money, red colobus monkey et cetera. Chimp expert Jane Goodall brought the marvelous chimps of Gombe to worldwide recognition through her research projects. Much of those research still continues to this day.
It is interesting to observe Chimpanzees in their natural habitat who are very amusing and intelligent animal species. In addition to the Chimps, the vibrant red tail and blue colobus monkeys are likely to be spotted. As there is a lack of carnivore species, Gombe is very safe for walking safaris.
