RUBONDO ISLAND NATIONAL PARK
OVERVIEW
It’s the Africa’s largest Island national park. It serves as an important breeding and living ground for both native and migratory birds along with various fish species.
The park is located on the south-western corner of Lake Victoria in Geita region about 150 km (95 miles) west of Mwanza city. The Lake (Victoria) is the second largest lake in the world. It is also the source of River Nile, the longest river in the world. 80% of this park is comprised of dense forest which accommodates variety of wildlife. The rest of the park consists of savannahs, open woodlands, and papyrus swamps.
Together all these land form a perfect accommodating place for various wildlife species which include, but are not limited to, sitatunga antelope, vervet monkeys, bushbucks, genet cats, spotted necked otters, hippopotamus and crocodiles which share the ecological niches with introduced species such as chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes, black and white Colobus monkeys, suni and African grey parrots. The park is also famous by holding a variety of migratory birds from different parts of the world.
